Anti-Snoring Device

Anti-Snoring Device in Basel
In brief: anti-snoring and mandibular advancement devices
Snoring can be more than a nighttime noise. In some people it is associated with narrowing of the upper airway during sleep and may occur together with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). OSA involves repeated episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction and can cause oxygen desaturation and disrupted sleep. Diagnosis belongs in sleep medicine.
A custom mandibular advancement device can help selected patients by holding the lower jaw forward during sleep and thereby increasing upper-airway space. It may reduce snoring and, in appropriate cases, the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea.
Potential Benefits and Treatment Goals
Can reduce snoring in many appropriately selected patients
An evidence-based option for selected patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea
May improve sleep quality and daytime alertness
Non-surgical and reversible – no operation is required
Compact and convenient for travel
Individually manufactured and adjustable for fit, comfort and therapeutic mandibular advancement
Who may benefit from a mandibular advancement device?
For primary snoring after clinically relevant sleep apnoea has been excluded
mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
When CPAP is not tolerated or is declined and a sleep-medicine assessment considers an oral appliance appropriate
When mandibular position contributes to upper-airway narrowing during sleep
As part of a coordinated treatment plan for selected sleep-related breathing disorders
Less suitable when:
Schwere Schlafapnoe (Apnoe-Hypopnoe-Index > 30)
Severe obesity or neurological/medical conditions may reduce suitability and require medical assessment
Insufficient dental support, active periodontal disease or inadequately restored posterior tooth loss can limit the use of a tooth-supported device
Treatment Process
In cooperation with a sleep physician or sleep laboratory, the diagnosis is established – for example with respiratory polygraphy or polysomnography – and the suitability of an oral appliance is assessed.
Assessment of the teeth, periodontium, temporomandibular joints and muscles; a digital impression or scan is used for accurate appliance fabrication.
The device is individually made in a dental laboratory, commonly as a two-part upper- and lower-jaw system with adjustable mandibular advancement.
The degree of advancement is increased gradually according to comfort and therapeutic response rather than using a fixed amount for every patient.
Sleep quality, symptoms and oral side effects are reviewed. Follow-up sleep testing may be recommended by the sleep physician to document treatment effectiveness.
Effectiveness and scientific evidence
Established treatment option:
Systematic reviews show that mandibular advancement devices can reduce the apnoea–hypopnoea index and snoring in selected patients with OSA. The magnitude of improvement varies, and treatment effectiveness should be verified objectively when the device is used for sleep apnoea.
Quality of life:
Effective treatment of sleep-disordered breathing can improve sleep-related symptoms and daytime function, but individual response to an oral appliance varies and should be monitored.
Long-term tolerance:
Most patients tolerate treatment well, but jaw-muscle discomfort, tooth movement or bite changes can occur and require dental monitoring.
Comparison with CPAP:
CPAP generally reduces respiratory events more strongly than oral appliances, whereas mandibular advancement devices are often better tolerated. For selected patients with mild to moderate OSA, adherence can make oral-appliance therapy clinically effective.
Costs and Individual Treatment Planning
Costs depend on the diagnosis, appliance design and laboratory technique. With a documented diagnosis of sleep apnoea, some insurers may contribute to treatment depending on the policy and approval process.
Treatment | Typical range |
Sleep-medicine assessment (external) | according to the physician / sleep-laboratory tariff |
Dental planning, scan/impression and analysis | 250 – 450 CHF |
Custom adjustable mandibular advancement device (upper and lower jaw) | 1’500 – 2’300 CHF |
Review and adjustment | 100 – 250 CHF |
Frequently asked questions
Is the appliance comfortable to wear?
Most patients adapt after an initial familiarisation period. The appliance is individually fitted, and the advancement is adjusted gradually to balance effectiveness with comfort.
Can it help with loud snoring?
Often, particularly when airway narrowing is influenced by posterior displacement of the lower jaw or tongue. Other causes such as nasal obstruction, obesity or severe OSA may require additional or alternative treatment.
Can I travel with it and sleep normally?
Yes. Oral appliances are compact and easy to transport, although they should be cleaned and stored according to the care instructions.
Are there side effects?
Temporary jaw-muscle tension, salivation changes or morning bite changes can occur. Longer-term tooth movement or occlusal changes are possible, which is why regular dental follow-up is important.
Quieter nights with medically guided treatment
A custom mandibular advancement device can reduce snoring and improve sleep-disordered breathing in selected patients. When OSA is suspected or diagnosed, treatment is coordinated with sleep-medicine assessment and follow-up.
If you snore, experience unexplained daytime tiredness or already have a diagnosis of mild to moderate OSA, we can assess whether an oral appliance is dentally suitable and coordinate treatment with your sleep-medicine provider.
Diagnostics and Planning
Symptoms involving the masticatory system are often multifactorial. We therefore assess the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, tooth contacts, loading patterns and the course of symptoms together. The aim is a staged approach that is as reversible as possible, with regular reassessment.
Limitations, Risks and Alternatives
A splint or functional treatment will not resolve every type of head, muscle or joint symptom. With atypical symptoms, neurological signs or suspicion of another cause, medical or physiotherapy assessment may be appropriate. Treatment is adjusted according to the clinical course.
Anti-snoring devices in Basel: experience and clinical context
In our Basel practice, functional symptoms are not assessed solely on the basis of individual tooth contacts. We consider symptoms, muscles, joints and reconstructive factors together and, where possible, begin with reversible measures. Other disciplines are involved when appropriate.More about Dr Thomas Gasser’s training and qualifications.
