Healthy gums and stable bone are the foundation for natural teeth, implants and dental restorations. Periodontitis can progress unnoticed for a long time and should be treated systematically.
Treatment usually begins non-surgically. Only after professional biofilm control and re-evaluation do we decide whether additional measures are required.
What does periodontology mean?
Periodontology focuses on the tooth-supporting tissues – the gums, periodontal ligament and bone that support the teeth. If untreated, chronic inflammation in periodontitis can lead to progressive loss of these structures and compromise the long-term prognosis of the teeth.
Periodontal treatment in Basel therefore follows a stepwise approach: reduce inflammation, control risk factors, treat difficult-to-access areas selectively and then establish individual supportive periodontal care. Tooth preservation does not mean keeping every tooth at any cost, but assessing prognosis realistically.

Periodontology before reconstruction
Before implants, crowns or extensive restorative treatment, inflammatory conditions should be as stable as possible. Periodontology is therefore an integral part of many reconstructive treatment plans.
Tooth preservation as a goal
Even significantly compromised teeth can sometimes be preserved depending on their prognosis. At the same time, it is important to identify hopeless teeth in good time so they do not unnecessarily compromise the overall treatment plan.
