Planning implants prosthetically, respecting tissues and working three-dimensionally
Implant dentistry becomes particularly demanding when bone is limited, soft tissue is unfavourable, several implants are required or the final prosthetic restoration has high aesthetic and functional demands.
In these cases, we plan backwards from the future tooth: Where should the crown be positioned? How should it be cleaned? Which implant position supports this goal? The surgical steps are then derived from that plan.
What does complex implant dentistry mean?
We use the term complex implant dentistry when treatment involves more than simply placing an implant and bone volume, soft tissue, implant position, aesthetics and the future prosthetic restoration need to be planned together. In demanding situations, careful planning is essential for a restoration that later functions well and can be cleaned effectively.
In our Basel practice, implant position is therefore planned backwards from the desired tooth form and function. Bone augmentation, soft-tissue management or 3D planning are added only when they contribute meaningfully to a robust overall concept.

Not every bone deficiency requires the same augmentation
Small defects, pronounced horizontal deficiencies and complex vertical defects require different techniques. In some situations, changing the implant position or restorative concept can avoid more extensive augmentation.
Plan prosthodontics and surgery together
A technically osseointegrated implant is only a good restoration if the final crown can also be designed appropriately for function, aesthetics and hygiene. Surgical and prosthodontic planning are therefore combined.
