With immediate implant placement, the implant is inserted directly after tooth extraction in the same appointment. In selected cases, this can offer advantages for treatment duration and tissue management.
The indication is crucial. Not every damaged or inflamed tooth is suitable for immediate implant placement. Bone, soft tissue, infection status, implant stability and the future prosthetic position all need to be compatible.
What does immediate implant placement mean?
With immediate implant placement, an implant is inserted directly after tooth extraction in the same appointment. This can shorten the treatment pathway and make favourable use of existing tissue structures, but it is not the safest or most appropriate approach in every situation.
Whether immediate implant placement is suitable in Basel depends, among other factors, on the bone, soft tissues, inflammatory situation, implant stability and the planned future crown. The decision is therefore preceded by careful clinical and, where necessary, three-dimensional planning.
When can immediate implant placement be appropriate?
A tooth cannot be preserved, but the bony conditions are favourable.
The implant position can be achieved correctly and stably from a prosthetic perspective.
The soft tissue can be appropriately preserved or augmented.
The inflammatory and risk situation can be controlled.
Tissue-preserving tooth extraction
The extraction is planned to be as atraumatic as possible so that bone and soft tissue are preserved. Depending on the defect, additional bone or soft-tissue augmentation may be necessary.
Immediate implant placement does not always mean an immediate crown
Whether a provisional crown can and should also be placed on the same day depends on stability, the bite and the aesthetic situation. Implant placement and immediate provisionalisation are two separate decisions.
